Guys, I am so excited about this new series of baby quilts! For me, making baby quilts that are cute but also FAST is a must. I really love using a large scale applique shape as a focal of a baby quilt. This means there is no piecing involved, and it is easy to whip up in a day. Introducing.... the Ellie Elephant Baby Quilt!
What is your favorite type of applique? Have you tried applique before? There are many different approaches to applique. For this project, since I'm going for speed and ease, I chose to do machine applique with a fusible web. Essentially, you trace your shape onto a fusible web, fuse it to your fabric, cut out the shape, and then fuse it to the background fabric. It's a simple, straightforward way to create a big impact! Of course the pattern goes into more details here, it's available as an immediate download in my shop.
I chose to do a zig zag stitch along the raw edges of my elephant. I want this quilt to be able to withstand the washing machine and hold up to whatever childhood might throw at it. I finished it with some simple machine quilting in diagonal lines, and even added a heart shape within the elephant's ear. I think that might be my favorite part - I love the hidden touch.
What do you think about the Ellie Elephant Baby Quilt? What other animals or motifs would you like to see on a quilt?

- Elephant Ear - Moda Bella Cotton (I forgot to write down which color!)
